COMPASSION AND EMPATHY
I am a South African artist and interior decorator. Although my passion for art had humble beginnings it has evolved on a professional level. My compassion and empathy for people provides a platform to express the plight of others in my paintings. South African women and children, as well as the elderly, feature prominently in my work. Some of my artworks are haunting but convey bold statements. The recipients of my paintings say they have become conversational pieces in their homes. The highlight of my career was meeting former President Nelson Mandela. I gave him a portrait of himself on behalf of the community of Durban in 2006. The gift was an expression of my appreciation for his lifelong contribution to facilitating national reconciliation. He has since inspired me to continue my portrayal of those that are destitute and in need. I have also done commissioned portraits of Chief Albert Luthuli, Ghandi and Steve Biko. My talents are not confined to oil paintings. Some of my most memorable modern contemporary works are the murals that adorn the walls of Chief Albert Luthuli Central Hospital. I have also painted murals in London and sold numerous works internationally. I contribute a percentage of my sales to various charities. My goal is to address the needs of our community and the accolades that come with it are a bonus. In my view, business-minded artists should be viewed as community builders, creative economy facilitators, and hardworking entrepreneurs.
