LESLEY IRELAND MATHEW

I studied BA FINE ART HDE at the University of Pietermaritzburg in the early 80's, which entrenched in me a deep respect for the formal elements of art and sound drawing.

My oil paintings deal with the triangular relationship between man, God and nature. As God's spirit unites with the soul of man, the conscience is awakened, which sets off a series of questions about the consequences of our actions.

A vanitas theme is often present in my work, where attachment to material things prevents us from attaining sublime peace with each other and with God.
